FAQ

What is Indian Club Swinging?

Indian Club swinging is an old form of exercise that can be performed with one or two clubs. The clubs are swung in a pre-determined sequence around the body and head.

What are Indian Clubs?

Indian Clubs are bowling pin-shaped wooden clubs, held in the hand and swung for individual exercise and fitness workouts. Indian Club Swinging is performed in a pre-determined coordinated sequence around the body and head using one or two clubs. The clubs vary in weight, according to the strength of the person using them. Light weight clubs offer lower impact aerobic exercise, whereas progression to heavier weights increases core stability, upper body and shoulder strength.

What are Indian Clubs made from?

Traditional clubs are made from a hardwood, primitive clubs were hand shaped, modern day clubs are made on a woodworkers lathe into a shape that resembles a bowling pin. Each pair of clubs is made from the same piece of timber which means that the wood density and club weight are constant.

Are Indian Clubs and Clubbells the same?

Do not confuse Indian Clubs with Clubbells, they are very different. Clubbells are made from metal, which is denser and heavier than wood, therefore on the most part they are heavier than Indian Clubs and a lot shorter as a result, this means the weight is closer to the wrist. Indian Clubs are made from wood which is lighter than metal, they are a lot bulkier and longer than Clubbells, placing the body of the weight further away from the wrist than a Clubbell.

What are the benefits of Indian Club Swinging?

The average healthy adult can easily gain substantial benefits from Indian Club Swinging, which possesses the essential property of expanding the chest, encouraging deep breathing. Movement sequences improve concentration and coordination. Club manipulation enhances dexterity and the swinging action aids flexibility. Club-Swinging engages core muscles to maintain trunk stability and enhance balance. This is beneficial for the abdomen and also improves the health of the spine, as a strong abdominal core helps stabilise the lower back.

What safety aspects apply to Indian Club Swinging?

All Club-Swinging exercises should be performed with safety in mind.
Be very careful with children and animals in your workout space, as neither have any awareness of Indian Clubs and the dangers they present if they accidentally run into them whilst you are focused on club-swinging.

Should I let my friends swing my Indian Clubs?

Friends and acquaintances, sober or affected by medications, alcohol and drugs can be unbelievably clumsy. Lacking Club-Swinging experience they can grab hold of your clubs, and not having any space awareness can unintentionally hit other friends and objects, causing grief and mayhem, it’s a potential accident waiting to happen.  So the answer is AVOID it at all costs.

What is an Indian Club SPACE SAFETY CHECK?

Always perform a SPACE SAFETY CHECK prior to Club-Swinging. This means holding and pointing both clubs outward with outstretched arms straight up above your head and check for light fittings, washing lines & other potential obstacles.
Next hold the clubs straight out in front of you and point them outward, then slowly open your arms out to the sides and check twisting your trunk look behind on both sides.
Remember to do this every time you are about to begin a Club-Swinging session. Especially when starting.
