Suria Akhara Gada Mace Training

Ladder Style Training 8kg, 12kg, 25kg GADA Mace

This is a video about Suria Akhara GADA Mace Training. All the training is one-handed, with each hand doing the same amount of repetitions as the other.

The training is ladder-style, it starts with an 8kg gada mace, then moving up to 12kg, and finally progressing to a 25kg gada mace.

The video footage focuses on the back view so that you can see the whole movement.

Floor Start

I think it with noting the floor start, where the gada mace is swung between the legs and then flipped up onto the shoulder, or immediately swung.

In this instance, 360 swings are used one-handed, and 10 to 2’s are two-handed.

Messing with a 100kg GADA Mace

I was allowed into the akhara storeroom, where I spotted the 100kg stone GADA, and the boys decided to pull it out so that I could take a picture. Then bravado took over and they decided to try and lift this monster.

Gada Training for the Young and Old

Finally, during the morning session, an older guy came in and started his GADA training with an 8kg and 12kg mace using the one-handed method, which should act as an inspiration to all, that age is no limit.

I personally started to swing a Gada six years ago and I am now 64yo. Update I am now 71yo and still swinging the Gada.

Langota

Wikipedia describes the langota as an undergarment worn by Indian men as a loincloth or underclothing, usually by Pahlawan exercising or sparring in dangal at traditional wrestling akharas.

Cotton

It is made up of a rectangular strip of cotton cloth used to cover the genitals with the help of the strings connected to the four ends of the cloth for binding it around the waist of the wearer.

Practice Sessions and Training

It is used by wrestlers in the game of Kushti or traditional Indian wrestling in the akhara (wrestling gym) and during practice sessions and training.

Not Speedos

I have had many comments from videos I have made in Varanasi, asking why these athletes are wearing speedos. They are not speedos rather the traditional garment worn in all akharas.

Heat and Humidity

It is 1st August here and the temperature at 9 am this morning was 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with very high humidity. Now at 11 am we have reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit and massive humidity that emanates from the river Ganges (known locally as Mother Ganga).

Perspiration and Sweat

Believe me that you will break into perspiration just from taking a slow leisurely walk, let alone any form of hard exercise that will make you sweat, so the langota is an ideal garment for training.
