My 64th Birthday Workout, to celebrate I have recorded this mornings workout to show my favourite exercises using Indian Clubs, Meels and Gada Mace.

64th Birthday Workout - Favourite ExercisesFlashback to 2007, my doctor told me to lose weight as I was tipping the scales at 110kg, about 20kg overweight, I was also diagnosed with high blood pressure and bordering on Diabetes 2. No wonder I used to get out of breath just bending over to tie my shoelaces every morning.

The doctor told me “Have a lifestyle change, lose some weight, eat less and drink no more than two glasses of wine at day, do plenty of exercise and make sure you push weights to slow down the onset of osteoporosis as you are getting on in years” I was 57 then.

I walked out of the surgery feeling like a scalded school kid having been read the RIOT ACT, getting over the embarrassment, I decided to do something about it as, I was not ready to start pushing up daisies.

64th Birthday Workout - Favourite ExercisesSearches on the Internet led me to Kettlebells, and coming from a Russian Polish background I can remember my Father talking about training with Kettlebells, so without much fuss I took to it like a duck to water, I particularly enjoyed the swinging, ballistic and pressing aspect of Kettlebells.

Lifestyle changes meant that I take a hard look at my food and alcohol consumption, my diet refocused easily and I decided to stop drinking alcohol completely.

Further Internet searches revealed Indian Clubs, Persian Meels and Gada Mace, all of which seemed offer an abundance of variety both physically and mentally.

A local wood turner made up Indian Clubs and Persian Meels for me and I bought a commercially manufactured steel Gada Mace.

64th Birthday Workout - Favourite ExercisesThe last six years have been very fruitful, the combination of Indian Clubs, Kettlebells, Persian Meels and Gada Mace created a very exciting training environment and helped me become fit and loose 20kg in the process. My blood pressure has returned to normal and the threat of Diabetes 2 has gone.

Why am I writing about my 64th Birthday Workout?

It is just to say that it is never too late to make changes in your life, and if anything here rings a bell, it’s time to do something about it, because you can. From a Healthy Old Fart.

    Very nice club work, Paul. You’ve given me plenty to work on when I finally get my plastic Beard clubs delivered (in the post somewhere at the moment) I’m 5’10 and before I went to the gym I weighed 195 Kilos – I got this down to 184 Kilos which I regard as my fighting weight. But then I got bored with the gym and luckily found Indian clubs. I did try Kettlebells but these were a bit too much for me, so the clubs were the ideal solution. I’ve put on some weight around the middle because of stopping for my elbow injury and I am less energetic generally. I’m sure you’re right about the clubs – they do promote good health and I can do a lot more when I’m using them in everyday life. Like you, I decided to cut out alcohol – I think it’s a bigger evil than we realise and regular consumption piles on the weight. I still have a tipple at high days and holidays, but virtually nothing else. So at 68, I can still do a lot of physical things my contemporaries can’t, although I have to admit to a little slowing down. It will be interesting to see how long I can maintain my body in a fit state using the clubs. They certainly help with bowling – especially in the muscle control required for a smooth delivery of the wood. And, as I’ve said before, the mental aspect of concentration required to keep the club swinging cleanly is another bonus. So, keep the videos coming and I can’t wait to get started again.

      Thank you Charles, as you say the small lifestyle tweaks make a huge difference. On the subject of clubs, I am endlessly surprised at the variety of movement, which I tried to show in this mornings video. Glad you liked it. Good luck with your training when it recommences.
